What happens when you finish a career or two? You find another one to leverage your skills and experience. That is exactly what Eric and Heather Hamman did, and the real estate world has not been the same since.

Eric is a third-generation excavator. His mother has a picture of him sitting on a bulldozer at six months of age. Within a year of joining the business after high school, Eric began overseeing crews as a foreman and later superintendent. He loved the work (still does), and he later (at 25 years old) formed a partnership and added a concrete business to the mix.

After working several years building 150 basements annually, some 20 hotel projects and working on sub-divisions, the business took a toll on Hamman. He later sold heavy equipment for a time, but at a breaking point, he knew a change was required.

Heather’s background is accounting. She worked for a chain of gas stations and a law firm. The couple joined forces, enrolled in real estate classes (2013) and joined the ranks of successful agents. The rest could be considered history, but it is so brief. The Hammans soared past the rising star awards to elite status. With sales over $110 million in five years, Eric and Heather have broken many records, and they have found a niche that works and that they enjoy.

Heather loves all clients but has an affinity for first-time buyers. It is a real joy to help them down the path to home ownership. Eric notes that truly finding out what someone really needs fulfills his propensity to become a problem solver.

They both enjoy the praise that clients give, and they each find their strengths rewarding. Eric’s knowledge of properties and Heather’s attention to the detail of contracts are complementary. “In all my years of excavation,” he says, “I have been on or near most of the properties in this area, and that helps!”

Eric admits that the culture in excavation and real estate are quite different. “I was used to just bluntly stating my disagreements with someone, so I had to learn the art of guidance,” he explains. The couple works with many who have decades of business ownership, so their clients can have definite ideas.

The Hammans have learned to listen carefully, but they are very confident in their responses. “The key is building a relationship first,” says Eric. After that, the team’s vision for properties and knowledge of home ownership comes into play. Clients love the fact that they have experience that is so diversified. Eric and Heather have achieved their success through an enormous amount of heard work and dedication. Some would even call them relentless, but they know that real estate selling is not for the faint of heart. “Not delivering” for their clients would be failure!

Eric and Heather have been married for seven years. They have a son, Cale, who is 22 and a daughter, Brooklyn, who is 13. Heather and Brooklyn, who has down-syndrome, spend a lot of time on special events such as riding at a local therapeutic horse ranch, the Special Olympics or running a 5k. The couple is happy to donate to several good causes, and they sponsor several charities. Eric has a special interest in racing dirt bikes, and the couple used to travel a lot doing it. Heather, an ordained minister, quotes versus from 1 Peter that talk about “casting our anxiety upon God” since He cares for us. It helps her through the more difficult times.

The Hammans have some sage advice for those considering a start in real estate or who are newer. They trust new agents will realize that their business involves extreme dedication and sacrifice. They also note that they will most likely “max out” some credit cards in the beginning, for real estate selling is expensive. The couple remembers almost quitting after about 60 days, and then they receive their first big commission check. Eric notes that the key is surrounding oneself with successful people!

Someday, the Hammans hope that they will look back at their journey and find that people remembered them as highly dedicated and professional. “We have a high standard and work with the best,” he says. Still, the couple loves to serve people, and they find their clients’ satisfaction to be a high priority.

Eric has been described as relentless, creative and a salesman. Heather is loving, caring and dedicated. When putting those qualities together, the world of real estate gets a dynamic team that knows how to cast a vision for properties, has the experience to find what clients want and who works on making relationships a priority. No one knows where the Hammans will soar next, but it will be noticeable and high!

I was a broker at a logistics company.

What are you passionate about right now in your business?

There is so much opportunity for growth in the industry we are in. With that being said, I’m just trying to get better all-around every day as a person and as a business owner.

What has been the most rewarding part of your business?

For me, the most rewarding part of Real Estate is getting the opportunity to call and tell someone they got the home they wanted. That is a pretty great feeling.

What was your biggest challenge as a realtor?

Like everyone else, the lack of inventory definitely keeps you on your toes.

How does real estate fit into your dreams and goals?

Real Estate allows me to chase my goals with a reasonable amount of flexibility (sometimes) while getting to help people with one of the biggest purchases they’ll make in their life.

What’s your favorite part of being a realtor?

The people. Growing relationships with clients new and old, working with some fantastic partners, and sharing ideas with some sharp colleagues. I’ve met some pretty incredible friends that will last a lifetime.

Define success.

Success is being committed to a daily process. Waking up and trying to be better than the day before. Setting goals, staying enthusiastic about hitting them even during those times it doesn’t seem like you will and persevering to see it through until you do.

Tell us about your family.

My wife, Kelli, and I have been married for almost five years. We have a charcoal Lab named Ellie and a cat named Molly.

What are you hobbies and interests outside of the business?

I’m a lifelong IndyCar fan so I love watching anything related to the series and typically travel to a few races a year. Cheering on my Fighting Irish with friends, trivia at Ted’s, and traveling with my wife are other hobbies that I enjoy.
